CA – CATALYST OF SOCIAL CHANGE

We don't live in a perfect world. As professionals we do what we can to make corrections in our own humble way. WIRC has always been a beacon of professional as well as social change. To ensure that betterment of society is made intrinsic to our professional life WIRC implemented a unique social programme which stressed on “Use of Professional Skills in Social Upliftment”. WIRC firmly believes that we can use our professional talents and skills to usher in a brighter tomorrow for many.

We believe that the most effective way to promote positive social change is for each member to become his own social contributor and use his professional skill to come up with innovative solutions to social issues that are sustainable and replicable both locally and nationally. Some examples of how CAs are helping to bring about social change is highlighted below.

Bringing professional insight into woes faced by the common man, our members have brought their own services to help society. Agricultural issues were looked into by branches in Gujarat and appropriate research undertaken to understand problems faced by the farming community. After an in-depth analysis, our members found that for farmers to save money, they need to reduce expenses on all fronts (including water, seeds, fertiliser, etc) while also paying attention to realisation of insurance money. To implement these steps, appropriate liaisons between farmers, government organisations and banks needed to take place. The outcome was a clearer picture that farmers need to be made aware of latest technology in water management, seed technology as well as concrete action which needs to be implemented to be more cost effective.

A similar research undertaken by members into the lives of the Goan motorcycle / scooter taxi pilots revealed that poverty and lack of education have downgraded the quality of their lives. They cannot avail of financial assistance, save money regularly or even avail of insurance even though they are in a potentially life threatening profession. With these parameters clarified, members can now step in to advise, encourage and improve their financial understanding while also upgrading the quality of their lives.

Our members have even outlined a clear plan of action to comply with RBI directives about helping the financially disabled and including them into the banking system. This seemingly difficult task can be made easier through systematic assistance to this category in complying KYC norms and thus transforming their lives by helping them open bank accounts and save their hard earned money.

These real life examples clearly state the drive and dynamism of our members to help our fellowmen. We are constantly visualising and planning innovative programmes which employ our skills as CAs to give a helping hand. At the same time we have continuously and with great honesty continued our regular social work through our activities.

WIRC has been organising blood donation camps on a regular basis all over our region. We have, quite literally, saved thousands of lives through our blood donation campaigns. The success of these camps have increased our enthusiasm to make these activities a permanent aspect of WIRC social work.

At the same time, WIRC does not take our environment for granted. We are equally concerned about saving our planet. To that end, we have also planted innumerable trees all over the region ensuring that our children will inherit a greener world than today.

The greatest gift, they say, is the gift of sight. Our eye check-up camps have ensured that people of the lower strata of society do not lose this most precious of gifts and can continue to live their lives in a dignified manner. Another component of health is cleanliness. WIRC has taken this into consideration as well and on numerous occasions arranged for cleanliness drives to ensure that people and children live clean lives in a clean environment.

To leave a lasting positive legacy, WIRC members regularly do career counselling for financially poor students, but they do not stop there. Members have also taken to financially adopting the education of these students who study to become the CAs of tomorrow. For those students, who for some reason or another cannot become CAs we promote and employ as Accounting Technicians. All these factors go a long way in ensuring that we do our duty to society while also ensuring a new generation of CAs are ready to serve when the time comes.

To really reach out to the common man, every year WIRC members host free lectures for everyone. These lectures include educating people on the budget and what it means for the lay man as well as bringing about investor awareness. We ensure that the lectures are also made in vernacular languages so as to ensure maximum clarity of understanding for the common man.

Today, WIRC has made social upliftment an essential part of its DNA. Members carry on these humanitarian tasks with only one motive – service to humanity. Tomorrow these activities will bear fruit and we will see a much healthier, stronger, financially stable and greener society. For the present, however, WIRC members live by the credo, “Always do your best without expecting the results and you will be happy.”
